Barbecue a Dolphin

by Archy

Firstly, from Paul:-

I'm going to answer the question before it's asked. Dolphin is a protected species so the hunting, killing and eating is illegal.

By publishing this question I want to make it quite clear that I do NOT condone the actions of the questioner however the question has forced me to research this point and I hope that others will learn as well.

If you search the internet for Dolphin recipes you will find quite a few but these relate to Dolphin Fish which is completely different to the protected species. Also known as Mahi Mahi or Dorado these are highly sought after for sport and also there are many Mahi Mahi restaurants.

So, to repeat, Dolphin is a protected species and it is illegal to hunt. Do not confuse with Dolphin Fish, Mahi Mahi or Dorado.

I hope that this avoids any further confusion and if you really want to read the question that started all this off, then.....

Here's The Question:-

Hi, I'm a deep sea fisherman and one issue that keeps coming up is catching dolphins by mistake when we're doing our deep sea fishing. We normally just kill em and throw the body back in the sea minus their back fin which is great in soup. The only thing is one dolphin only makes about 4 bowls of soup and it seems a shame to chuck the rest in the sea if we could use it.

Coming across your site was great eye opener as to what can be barbecued. What I love to know is have you had any experience in Barbecuing a dolphin? Me missus keeps going on at me to post a question on the internet about cooking dolphin meat and dolphin recipes so we can feed our 3 hungry sprats back home. But I told her the meat is too tough and stringy. Anywhows that's when I got to thinking Barbecue em! Smoking them gently over the coals for a couple of hours might work! I would like to know what your advice is and any dolphin recipes would be great. Plus if you can give us a good rub sauce to go with it it would be great.

Thanks a lot. Archy

P.S. from Paul
I'm pretty sure that this was in jest (Archy, you know who you are) so to complete the fun (and special thanks to James Harbaugh of Philadelphia, Ms. for this idea) why not learn how to make Turtle Burgers?
