Homemade Barbecue Baked Beans Recipe

This is the homemade barbecue baked beans recipe comes with a BBQ sauce for anyone like me who likes to make meals from the base ingredients. Of course if your reading this thinking "not me!" then try my easy barbecue bean recipe.

Baked beans are traditionally made from white haricot beans, you can by them dried or ready hydrated straight out of the tin. Either way is good but if using dried, you will have to allow for an overnight soak before making the final preparations.

Stage two is then about the homemade barbecue sauce of your choice and I've got bucket loads to choose from. So if you're stuck just try the one I use below.

Ingredients:-

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic crushed
  • 2 finely chopped onions
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tube tomato puree
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dry English mustard
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ground black pepper to taste

Method:-

Fry the garlic and onions gently in the oil for 2-3 minutes until the onions go clear, then add the remaining ingredients.Bring to the boil, add the hydrated haricot beans, cover and simmer for about 20 - 30 minutes until the beans have softened. You'll find that the tinned ready hydrated beans will need less cooking becuase they're already soft so it's more aboutwarming through and making sure that the onioin and garlic flavours have time to infuse.

The barbecue sauce will make up well with a 400g can of hydrated beans or 100g of dried beans.

TIP - Don't be afraid to try out other types of beans. Pinto beans or canellini beans work just as well and ifyou've got that cheeky style throw in some green flageolet beans for a comedic colour!
