Alternatives To Barbecue Lighter Fluid
Alongside the charcoal in the store will be barbecue lighter fluid, probably a lighter gel, a general purpose fire lighter cube and if you're really lucky an electric charcoal lighter. All of the above (with the exception of the electric lighter) use petroleum derivatives for ignition and however you cut it, petroleum smells. After all, you wouldn't pour gasoline on you steaks would you? A pork butt can take up to 12 hours on a low and slow and inevitably that means tending of the fire. I'm blowed if I'm going to all that trouble to get a great smoky flavor and then to risk wasting it all by the smell of petroleum! When tending the firebox, you would put fresh unlit coals directly onto the fire and risk getting charcoal dust all over your food would you? So why take the risk with petroleum based lighter products? On a secondary note but no less important, an electric lighter is safe. Too many times have I seen people bending down and blowing onto charcoal to get the BBQ going risking a spark in the eye. The electric charcoal lighter eliminates risk because it works first time and every time. How much are your eyes worth, surely more than $25?
