Teriyaki Has To Be One Of My Best Grilled Salmon Recipes
Why is this one of my best grilled salmon recipes? Quite simply because the marinade is really easy to make up, the marinade time is relatively short and the results taste great. Over and above all that, I just love the color that Teriyaki adds to the grilled salmon.
Salmon is a very traditional fish used in Japan for teryaki. The word is derived from two words:-
Teri - meaning shine or gloss (from the sugar content)
Yaki - meaning the method of cooking ie. grilling
Now you can go down the shops and buy a great tasting Teriyaki marinade and make a perfectly respectable Teriyaki grilled salmon but come on, it's so easy, you've just got to make up the marinade yourself. To make the best grilled salmon recipes, it's gotta be homemade right? Think of the added satisfaction!
You can find the full list of ingredients (and loads more recipes) in my section on grilled salmon marinade recipes but for ease, it's all listed below. All you need to add are some salmon filets of about 150g each, there's enough marinade to cover 6 or 8 portions.
Just place all the marinade ingredients into a saucepan and bring it to the boil whilst stirring to dissolve the sugar. As soon as it starts to boil you can take it off the heat and put it to one side to cool.
Whilst the marinade is cooling you've got time to pin bone your salmon. Your fishmonger no doubt will have done a good job but it's always a good idea to pass your own scrutiny over the filet. Use your eyes and fingers to detect any bones and remove them with tweasers or a set of (clean!) pliers.
Once the marinade is cool you can place your salmon filets in the marinade bowl and pour over the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes but longer if possible.
Medium hot coals are the order of the day and grill the salmon for approximately 10 minutes on each side depending on thickness. During the cooking you can also spoon on a bit more of the marinade for that extra "je ne sais quoi".
TIP - To avoid and chance of the fish breaking up, use a barbecue fish mat and only turn the fish once using a "burger flipper".
To serve, I suggest a green salad together with a cannellini bean salad and tell me that it's not one of the best grilled salmon recipes that you've ever tasted!
