The Primo Oval Stands Out For Versatility
The bass pro shop in Des Moines has a kamado grill made by bull ceramic that doesn't look too bad any thoughts on this grill?
Answer:-
I've not had the opportunity to cook on a Bull kamado grill so please take that into consideration with my comments below.
There's plenty of ceramic barbecue grills on the market now so getting a good deal isn't as difficult as it used to be.
The fundamental design doesn't change (with the exception of the Primo Oval that I will discuss below) and therefore I would anticipate little difference in the capabilities of the different manufacturers. What's most important is to get the best grill at the best price and what makes it confusing is the offers from some manufacturers (what's incleded and what is an extra) make it difficult to compare apples with apples.
Things that I would check include:-
- The plate setter - this is the piece of ceramic that sits between your fire and your food and it's essential for indirect cooking or smoking. Make sure this is included.
- Side shelves - really handy unless you're going to integrate your kamado into a unit or table.
- The felt - this creates the seal between the base and the lid and ensures no leaks and good cooking control. Make sure that there is a felt.
- Temperature gauge
- Upper and lower vents are fully adjustable
To date I haven't found any reviews about the Bull kamado so it's very difficult to offer an opinion. Take your time, do your research and check out those other manufacturers (listed below).
Grill Dome
Primo
Dragon Fire
Big Green Egg
Kamado Joe
Bubba Keg or Big Steel Keg
Having said that you need to compare "apples with apples" when it comes to price, there is one Kamado that is definitely different in the list above and that's the Primo Oval.
For sure if you go for the Primo Round then this is pretty much standard to the others and can be compared directly but the Primo Oval for me has some additional features.
- It is a larger cooking area
- The oval shape is more convenient for cooking large pieces of meat
- It is effectively two halves or D shapes. You can isolate each D and cook directly on one and indirectly on the other (see picture above) or simply cook economically on one half if doing a small amount
If you can afford it, this would be my choice.
Happy shopping!
