Can I use my smoker as a grill?

by Stacey
(Kentucky)

I was given a smoker and I use it some, but I would like to have a grill to use but really can't afford to buy one. And just want to know if my smoker could be used as a grill?

Answer:-

It really depends what type of smoker you have. The fundamental difference between a smoker and a grill is the position of the heat source and what fuel type it is.

Position
A grill provides direct heat to the food i.e. the heating element is under the food, the fat drips down onto the grill plates or charcoal, it smokes and so flavors the food.

A smoker uses an indirect heat source more like an oven. Many smokers have a firebox to the side of the main cooking area and this is the traditional "offset" smoker.

So the bottom line here is whether you can place a heat source directly under the cooking grates. If the answer is yes, then you can use your smoker as a grill.

Fuel
This really answers itself following on from my last question because unless your heat source is charcoal, moving it will be difficult.

In addition, if your fuel source is electric or gas then it is unlikely that you will have the grill plates necessary for grilling. Unless of course they are already in position (but I hope you would have noticed if this is the case).

If you have a charcoal fuel source you maybe have more chance to grill by making your own fire tray out of some sheet metal and placing it in the barrel bottom of your smoker oven? I'm thinking as I write here to have a think about this yourself but don't do anything dangerous.

Summary
It really does depend on the type of smoker you have and also how much you value it. If you want to consider my charcoal idea just be aware that this could wreck your smoker. But if you really want a very simple cheap grill that you can make out of some bricks and a cake cooling tray then check out my low cost brick-bbq-grill idea. It's simple and it works.
