Charcoal Grill Pan

by Scott Normington
(Baltimore, MD)

I recently built an outdoor brick BBQ and I am having trouble finding a good charcoal grill pan for the bottom. I found an aluminum pan, but the 1st time I used it, it melted right through! The pan needs to be 26" long and 15"-18" wide. I'm thinking cast iron? Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:-

I once inherited a brick built grill in the garden of a house that I’d bought and there was no charcoal grill pan. I put one in made of sheet steel, it lasted a little longer than your aluminium effort but the end result was the same. Now I know what happened to the original!

When you think about cast iron you’re right on the money but I’m sorry to say that you won’t be able to find one off the shelf. Get down to your local blacksmith or metal worker and ask for one to be made up specially. It won’t cost you the earth but it sure will last you a lifetime.

Careful of Teflon
by: Anonymous

I agree cast iron is the way to go. It holds the heat and will last forever.

Don't use Teflon though, it can chip or peel under high temperatures and doesn't give the same grill marks.

Cast Iron
by: Chef Matt

Cast Iron is the way to go on this one for sure. Very heavy gauge steel will work too but over time it will distort and warp. The problem being that it does not cool or heat evenly each time you use it. This link will take you to a site that has all things cast iron. Good luck and I hope it helps. - Chef Matt-
