3 Fish Grilling Tips – How To Barbecue Fish Without It Breaking Up

Here’s how to barbecue fish or should it be how not to? I’ve got 3 great fish grilling tips that will help you present your culinary endeavours like a professional. In many cases grilling fish is really simple but it’s also very easy to get it wrong and I have to say that I’ve learned the hard way. Read on and you can learn the easy way.

The most common problems are when you come to take the fish off the grill and at best your tongs puncture the skin and make it less presentable and at worst the fish breaks up and lands on the coals.

To help you visualise I’ve deliberately goosed the first picture on this page – read on and make sure that you don’t do the same.

The most common way to counteract this is to wrap the fish in foil but I have to say that in my book that defeats the object of cooking it on the barbecue in the first place because none of the smoky flavour will be present in the finished product.

So, my tips for how to grill fish:-

  1. Use A Basket

You can get barbecue baskets shaped like fish but it’s not absolutely necessary and despite being a bit of a pain to clean they really do make life easy when it comes to flipping. Check the image below.

  2. Brush With Oil

Make sure that the skin of the fish is dry and brush with oil (preferably olive oil) and if using a barbecue basket then brush the basket too. Not only does this stop the skin from sticking to the basket (or grill plate) it make the basket easier to clean.

  3. Less Activity Is More

Let the coals settle so there’s absolutely no chance of a flare up, place your fish on the grill and cook gently. I know that it’s difficult to see when the fish is done but it’s really important to have faith and not continually check by flipping. There’s only one sure thing that will come of too much flipping and that’s exactly where we started – all the food in your barbecue and none in you! Fish cooks pretty quickly on the gentlest of heat so when you see the top side turning milky white rather than the translucent raw colour it’s time for the one and only flip.

Many folks will steer towards meaty fish such as monkfish or swordfish when it comes to the barbecue but follow these three golden fish grilling tips and you really can barbecue almost anything.
