Easy Grilled Tuna Recipes

Easily the best grilled tuna recipes all one one page – now I can't say fairer than that. Keep healthy and enjoy your cooking all rolled up into one.

In the picture below you can see a couple of ways that you can really make your grilled tuna steaks different.

Rub or marinade?

Fresh tuna is absolutely amazing and a million miles away from the stuff that you buy in cans.

From the health perspective a tuna steak has little fat on it but that presents challenges when it comes to grilling because it dries out easily.

The two things I recommend to stop your tuna drying out (and you'll see this in all my grilled tuna recipes) is a firstly marinade or some sort or oil. Either of these ways will help keep your tuna moist whilst it's on the grill.

Secondly it's in the way that the tuna is cooked. Now I know that this may not appeal to everybody but it is a perfectly acceptable way to serve a tuna steak. Grill it over a high heat for 1 or 2 minutes on each side dependent on thickness. This should be enough to ensure that the outside of the steak is cooked - the inside will still be raw and that's the way we want it.

If this conjures up less than pleasant thoughts, please go with me, once you've tried it, I'm sure you'll never want it cooked any other way. Certainly I eat it all the time like this and I'm not dead yet!

Speaking from the food safety perspective, any harmful bacteria grow on the outside of a steak so provided the exterior is cooked, you don't need to worry about the inside. Safety precautions aside, tuna needs to be fresh, it should never get to that stage where there's a change of bacteria growing anyway.

To get the high heat that is required it is best to sear the tuna on the hotpate of your gas barbecue or even a cast iron skillet or griddle. If you really want to, you can do it on charcoal but you really need to have good hot coals and the cooking grate as close to the coals as possible. I prefer to cook on charcoal usually but this is one time when I revert to my gas grill because in all honesty it is a lot of effort to light a charcoal grill for what is effectively 2 or 3 minutes of cooking.
