Homemade Charcoal Grills
Ideas How To Build Them

I’ve taken some pictures of my homemade charcoal grills so that you can see how easy it is to build charcoal grills from literally nothing.

I first started grilling in my backyard as a student when I had very little money so I decided to build a brick bbq grill with cost being the absolute priority. It consisted of a number of bricks and the grill rack was a couple of cake cooling trays from my local supermarket.

Just a few bricks, a cake cooling tray and you're up and running

As you can see, it’s extremely primitive but it works and I’ve rebuilt similar constructions for many a campfire grill. As with any grill of this design the heat control is effectively the distance between the charcoal and the food and the adjustment on this grill is simply by the number of bricks and the edge profile.

Thinking more about supermarkets, here’s a great picture I came across. Clearly an ingenious invention but I do not condone stealing trolleys from supermarkets!

Don't do this at home!

What you can see is a camp fire with the shopping trolley above it. Where you would normally place you food in the trolley serves as a cooking grate.

It just goes to show that all you really need to make a barbecue grill is a fire, cooking grate and some sort of structure to hold the cooking grate over the fire.

Keeping with the brick theme but developing it somewhat I built this homemade barbecue grill a few years ago from an old sewing machine stand and a car jack.
