How Many Wood Chips?

by john
(colorado springs, co)

How many wood chips is recommended for the firebox?

Smoker rookie... Still learning..

Answer:-

I use two or three handfuls of pre-soaked wood chips, no more.

The first thing to point out is that the smoky flavor will be imparted to your food in the first couple of hours of cooking, after that, there’s little to be gained. Certainly it’s well documented that after the first five hours of cooking the smoker adds no value other than to control the temperature.

The trick is to spread the wood chips around in your firebox so that you get a long burn. Inevitably your fire will start in one area of the firebox and gradually spread throughout so by placing the wood all over your firebox you’ll get “sequential smoke production”.

One other point to consider is the strength of the smoke is dependent on the type of wood you’re using. Some wood chips offer a strong flavor and others less so and this is a matter of personal taste. The only answer here is to keep playing with it and see what tastes good to you – you won’t be a rookie for long!
