BBQ Tip -
How To Skin Tomatoes

Many BBQ sauces are derived from tomatoes so knowing how to skin tomatoes and seed them is an essential skill if you want to make homemade barbecue sauces or follow my recipe for that great Italian appetizer, bruschetta.

Once you know how to do it, it’s not that difficult to master.

I remember my first attempt at skinning tomatoes before I learnt this BBQ TIP and it was a disaster, my production line yield was about 50% as most of the tomato flesh remained attached to the skin and all I was left with was the seeds. Then a friend told me this TIP and I’ve never looked back!

Place your tomatoes in a bowl and with a sharp knife slash the skin down one side and pour over a kettle of boiling water. Leave to steep for a couple of minutes and watch as the skins start to come away from the flesh. Strain the tomatoes and peel with a knife taking care to let the tomatoes cool before picking them up! The skins will just fall away and you’re ready to start cooking

Of course if you want the freshness of tomatoes rather than using tomato ketchup but really can’t face peeling then I guess a can of chopped tomatoes is an acceptable compromise.
