Double Drip Pan Design Defect on Jenn-Air 720-0709B
by: Barb in KY

I have had this grill for 3 years. I like it very much. I bought it at Sam's Club because it came with a natural gas converter kit, so I could permanently hook it into my gas line. I refuse to lug around propane tanks. I have it under a 2 story high porch cover so it doesn't get rained on. So I've had no rusting or replacement issues.

It does have a design defect in the double drip pan. The first drip pan is riveted into the frame and cannot be removed. The company said it was designed to cool the grease before it drips down to the removable pan, but once the grease cools, it just sits in the first pan, building up, intruding into the floor of the burner base. The company knows it's a design flaw. I was told to use a tooth brush. You can access the drip pan only through the small holes in the burner floor.

I spent 2 hours with a tooth brush, a flat head screw driver, and 10 inch tweezer, scraping back and fishing out the crud. Then, I cut strips of T-shirt rags to work under there to get it mostly clean. However, the pan has enough flexibility of accommodate a heavy piece of aluminum slipped in over it. I cut down 2 oven liners and slid them back over the first drip pan.

I hope this works so I don't have to go through the cleaning nightmare again. The over liners are heavier than heavy duty aluminum. In fact, I ordered more as I intend to cut them down and use them on the second drip pan. I have also learned to line the floor of the burner with heavy duty aluminum, cutting holes in it to let the grease and debris drip down.

The company should have literature on this. Even their owner's manual does not explain or show the double drip pan. Oh, the Jenn-Air phone number given for grills was confusing. I called back the regular customer service agent, and she gave me an alternative number (with went through Kitchen-Aid grills, 877-373-2301), and I got through to a person who could talk intelligently about the problem.
