Barbecue Plank Cooking Tips

I’ve put together this list of plank cooking tips because if like I was once, you’re a barbecue enthusiast but a novice to this style of cooking after reading this page, you’ll be talking like an expert.

Cooking Planks

The first tip is to ensure that you get a good set of planks, my first set frankly looked like off-cuts from the local lumber yard and I could only marvel at how the seller had marketed a block of wood!

Before using your planks for the first time put a lug of olive oil in the hollowed out area because this will stop cracking. It’s also important to remember that the planks must be soaked for at least 30 minutes before cooking.

The oven or barbecue should be at around 180°C or 350°F and when ready, pop the planks in for about 10 minutes to warm up.

Take the planks out of the oven using mits or tongs (surprise surprise they do get hot!) and place your chosen food on them. Return to the barbecue or oven and cook for about 15 minutes.

Some meats may take slightly less or more depending on thickness but 15 minutes isn’t a bad rule of thumb.

Faster cooking leaves less time for the food to absorb the flavour of the wood so gently does it.

Plank cooked food generally doesn’t brown so a quick grilling on the barbecue to finish off may be too your liking.

Clean your planks down with warm soapy water and a nylon brush

Store them in a paper bag.
