Tomato Paste Or Tomato Puree?
When your recipes call for "tomato puree, is that what we in the Colonies (i.e. the U.S.) call "tomato paste"?
Forgive me, for I am but an ignorant Yank.
Paul's Answer:-
Matt - Don't consider yourself ignorant - you know how to ask a sensible question.
Isn't it amazing that we speak the same language......and then again, we don't? Mind you, I'm having trouble understanding my kids and I'm sure I taught them to speak UK English!
Technically, this is the answer:-
Tomato paste is tomatoes cooked for a long time to reduce to a thick paste. It can be fairly sweet.
Tomato puree consists of tomatoes that have been cooked briefly and sieved to remove the pips, resulting in a thick liquid. (The Italian's called it passata (passed through the sieve).
So in summary, paste is thicker than puree and could be a little sweeter.
Practically the answer is:-
Yes, it's the same.
I buy puree, I don't make it. If I made it to the letter like above then maybe there's a difference but when I buy, it comes in a tube like toothpaste.
Arguably paste might be a little sweeter but you "ignorant Yanks" like things a little sweeter than us "reserved Brits". :-) LOL!
LOL? - That's what my kids say!
