Will the winter months be too cold to leave our grill out on the patio?

by marj savage
(lakewood, co)

We use the grill all year long since we get some mild 50 degree and up days, but we can also get some 30 and below days. We do not want to ruin the product and render it unusable.

Answer:-

Extremes of whether are not good for a grill but then it is a piece of outdoor equipment and therefore should be built to withstand the variations in weather conditions that we have throughout the year.

For sure, just like your automobile it would do better to store it in the garage of a shed when not in use and bring it out when required but dependent on the style of grill you've got, I respect that this may not be possible.

The cold could cause paint to crack and any damp will bring on rust in the fullness of time so anything you can do to protect your grill will help.

The damp can also freeze the lid and I can vouch from past experience that this is somewhat inconvenient! I've also seen a number of grills damaged by a sudden cold snap following rain. The rain deposits moisture in the unit and this turns to ice. When water freezes it expands and it's during this expansion that damage can be caused - just like a burst pipe.

Have you thought about a grill cover? Of course it won't keep the cold out but it will prevent unwanted moisture ingression and therefore protect you against ice damage. They're not expensive and you can get them to fit more or less any grill. The largest range I've seen is available on the internet right here so I'm sure that you'll be able to find something to fit your grill.

I hope that this helps and you have many happy cookouts this winter!
