Simply The Best Backyard BBQ Sauce

Thanks Doug for sending in your best backyard BBQ sauce and looking down the list of ingredients it seems to tick all the right boxes.

There's the tomato base that is essential to most barbecue sauces together with the sweet and sour coming from the brown sugar and lemon juice respectively.

Topping it all off is a spice kick from Worcestershire sauce and cayenne pepper, what can I say? It's looking good.

Yield:- 3 cups or 720ml
Preparation Time:- 15 minutes
Cooking Time:- 1 hour

Total Time:- 1 hour 15 minutes


  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 (small 5.5 oz) can tomato juice
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper


This couldn't be easier to make, all you have to do is combine the ketchup, tomato juice, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, lemon juice, onion, brown sugar, garlic powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper in a blender or liquidizer and puree until you get a smooth consistency.

When smooth, transfer to a saucepan and bring the mix up to the boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 1 hour.
