Help With Low Or No Gas Flow As Cylinder Empties

by Fred
(The Gers, SW France)

This not a BBQ problem per se but I'm sure you can help. I have a large 5 burner range and gas oven, fed by bottled cylinder Butane. EG when the cylinder is empty, I just swap it at the shop.

For a while now the following has been happening. As the gas bottle gets to under half full, having one burner on is fine. But fire up a second burner and throw in the oven and presto, tiny flames from the burners making cooking impossible.

I go out into the cold (SW France so not too bad), shake the bottle and everything is ok for a few minutes, then again, all burners die down to just barely there.

I could swap for a full cylinder but would have to waste all the remaining gas in the bottle so there must be a better way.

Many thanks, any suggestions much appreciated. For instance, should I just lie the gas bottle on its side o, shorten the rubber gas hose from the regulator to the oven or, bring the bottle inside.

PS Great website. Will be a great reference in summer for the BBQ.

Maybe Switch To Propane
by: Paul

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your question. Upon reading about your situation I'm hearing a couple of things that lead me to the same conclusion:
  1. Butane
  2. I go out into the cold
  3. shake the bottle

It may not be overly cold but the boiling point of butane is minus 2 Celcius. Below this temperature and the butane in your bottle will remain a liquid and not vapourise when you turn on the burner. In fact, you'll experience this whenever the ambient temperature gets close to or below zero degrees.
Shaking the gas bottle does help (as you've found out) but it only has an effect for a short while.
The best solution is to switch to propane.
I hope that helps!
