Smoking Temperature Too High

I'm smoking a pork butt at 210F but realized too late the electric smoker was going up to 240F so the meat got to 180 degrees in 1/2 the time it was supposed to and I took it out.

Would it have been better to lower the heat dramatically and leave it in for a while longer so as not to increase the temp of the meat but have a better chance of making it more tender?
